The Engraving
Where the children's set tells a story that changes from piece to piece, this one repeats a single mark — a lotus rosette laser-cut into the centre of the thali, into each katori, into the side of the tumbler, and once more, small, on the handle of the spoon.
Kansa Dinner Set
A thali is not a plate with compartments — it is a way of eating, where the katoris hold what should not run into anything else and the rim keeps the rest where you put it. In bronze it gains weight, which sounds like a small thing until you have eaten off it: nothing slides, nothing rattles, and a served plate sits exactly where it was set down.
Solid 78:22 kansa — copper and tin, cast right through, never a coating over another metal. Every piece is cast and then worked by hand to its final polish, so small variations in tone and finish are normal and are the mark of the process rather than a flaw. The rosette is laser-engraved, cut cleanly into the metal at a consistent depth rather than printed on it, so it will not scratch off or fade with washing.
The difference is exactly one more katori. One suits a plated meal — a dal or a curry beside rice. Two is the more usual Indian setting, where a dal and a sabzi both want their own bowl. Everything else in the set is identical.
On the alloy
This set is cast to the 78:22 kansa specification, the same one every Tuoom piece is made to. What we have not done is measure this particular metal: the elemental report we publish sampled the alloy behind the children's set, and evidence about one melt is not evidence about another. So the number above is a specification, not a measurement, and we say so rather than borrowing the credit. A report covering this batch goes up here when we have it.
Read the assay we do publish →Still being measured: thali diameter, katori capacity, tumbler capacity, total weight. Rather than print an estimate we leave the row out — message us and we will send the exact figures.
Exactly one katori. Both sets have the same thali, the same tumbler and the same spoon. One katori suits a plated meal with a single dal or curry beside the rice; two is the more usual Indian setting, where a dal and a sabzi each want their own bowl.
One. This is a single place setting — one thali, its katori or katoris, one tumbler and one spoon. For a table of four you would want four sets.
No. The children's set carries a different animal on each piece — a whale, an elephant, a giraffe. This one carries a single lotus rosette, repeated on the thali, the katoris, the tumbler and the spoon. Same laser, same hand, a different thing to say.
No. It is made to the same 78:22 kansa specification as everything in the range, and that is all we will tell you about it, because a specification is what a thing is made to and an assay is what a thing measured. Ours measured the children's set's alloy. Until a report exists for this metal, you will find no composition figures on this page — and when one does exist it goes up on the kansa page whatever it says, which is the arrangement we have kept so far.
